I always find it interesting to see stories of companies banning Facebook.  It reminds me of when only a few years ago a friend of mine who works in academia genuinely asked if moible phones were allowed in the workplace or whether they were seen as a distraction.  Soon social networking tools will be seen as essential communication devices on a par with email and we will struggle with the idea of an organisation looking to ban their use.

 Anyway - if there is one organisation which may have a legitimate interest in prohibiting access you would think it would be the CIA or other intelligence agencies.  Whilst they may quite rightly not want agents to post information on Facebook, this does not mean they do not see the advantages of on-line social networking.  According to BBC News, they intend to launch A-Space in December, an on-line collaboration tool for agents to completment their existing wiki.

The CIA state they are looking to experiment in ways they would not have considered before.  We believe that if the CIA can do it without overcoming security concerns, other organisations have no excuse!

the point of banning is a great one ....I know a number of organisations who have banned MSN due to the distractions it causes - personally i think the productivity benefits of IM (Instant Messenger) outweigh the benefits, but I guess that it comes down to the company culture and how these tools are treated
